DVB Questions and Answers

  1. Can you tell me the implications of everyone's moving to the DVB carrier? Specifically, what will it cost me at my stations to replace the Wegener radios I have that get Ambassador, Focus, SRN, USA etc. with the new Unity 4000 radios?... what satellite will this stuff be on? Will it be GE3?
  2. Will there be concurrent service so we can move things over slowly, or are we going to have to do this in a short period of time (less than a week, for example)?
  3. Will everybody be up and running on both systems around the same time? Since I only have space for one satellite dish I have to move everything on the same day.
  4. Will I need a new dish -- I have a 2.8 meter dish now?
  5. I'm trying to get a budget number together for what it will cost us to move to the DVB service.
  6. Where do I get the receiver?  Also, when do I need to have it?
  7. With the new system I'm fuzzy as to what I will need to purchase to duplicate what we have or even if I need to duplicate what we have. What would be the minimum requirements?

  8. The current radios we use have 5 mono audio outputs and no relay cards. Suppose that I have 3 radios now (15 channel potential total) -- will I have to buy 4 Unity 4000 radios with 4 separate stereo audio outputs (I think 4 stereo channels is the max on the 4000, correct?). Some FM2 channels like SRN 1 and SRN 2 are combined for stereo programs from time to time. These channels in conjunction with tone decoders accomplish what we need to do.
When we go to the digital system, will I still be able to get all our channels or is there going to be some tuning and scheduling to do?
      1. Buy enough receivers to cover the programs you currently carry. A 4 port receiver cost just under $3100. In a previous question, they would need four receivers costing $12,400 to cover their 15 programs.
      2. Rarely, if ever, does a station use more the three programs simultaneously. A station need only purchase a single receiver and program the receiver to pick up programs as needed.  This programming may be done by one of the following:
        • Use a PC or automation system to execute serial commands through the RS-232 port on the UNITY4000 and change the configuration of the audio ports "on-the-fly".
        • Use front panel control to change the configuration of the audio ports.
        • Use a serial command interface to change the configuration of the audio ports from remotely mounted push buttons. The operator would press one button for instance, and a serial string would be sent to the receiver through the serial port and change the receiver configuration.
  9. We have two stations that may have live satellite programming on at the same time and we may also want to record two other feeds at the same time. Not to mention auditioning a channel for whatever reason.

  10. One scenario not mentioned was where 2 different programs are live on two radio stations and 2 are being captured for later broadcast.
  11. ... how will cue tones/closures be split between all the new providers. For example, what if I have 8 services that want to send me cue tones/closures. Will I have to buy 8 radios or can 1 radio split up tones/closures from different providers? I guess what I'm trying to figure out is how audio ports and relay contacts work with what we have.
  12. I'm an affiliate of a full-time service network such as Moody, Salem, or Skylight. How will they possibly be able to continue with just 3 relays for the automation control?
  13. So does this mean that I have to dedicate a receiver to that full-time network?
  14. Seems to me the best way to avoid confusion as to which port gets associated with which relay at what time is to have a audio port / relay combination dedicated to every needed audio feed.
  15. But you said any receiver that's affiliated with a full-time network has 8 relays dedicated to the full-time network. What relays would I get from the rest of the CRC members?
  16. If we have two receivers, will ONE computer's RS232 port be able to control both?
  17. Will software be supplied to control the receivers?
  18. Will the software run in the background and switch channel xxx to port A at a given time?
  19. Is anyone at your end and all the others talking with Automation manufacturers to let them control the RX with say, the Wizard?
  20. I can't believe that a weekend part time operator either here or at the send end could be relied on to get any switching right every time. Also there is always the inevitable re-feed of a missed something or other. I can see somebody changing the receiver to get that while it's in the middle of doing something else or not setting it back when done.

  21. I certainly don't want the Satellite provider telling my receiver what to tune into and I may not have an operator around to do it so I'll need another plan. It may be expensive but having everything available all the time is the easiest to "think" and probably implement with the least errors.
  22. Say a stereo feed/channel is being run dual mono. Can one assign the left channel of one of these to the left side of port 1 and the left channel of another one of these to the right side of port 1?
  23. Spoke to Focus and they say that they will have 3 stereo channels that they will run dual mono most of the time. In that regard I'm wondering what others will be using?
  24. Will each of the "four separate channels at 96kbps Mono" be selectable separately, or will stations need to set it up as something like

  25. "SETAUDIO 1 2 SR4 0<CR>"?
  26. I'm still thinking that two receivers with 4 ports each gives me a total of 16 audio outputs which is more than I currently have. But... is that the way it will go or do I need to go with a stereo port per present mono feed?
  27. Do you have a list of all the CRC members and the channels they have contracted? Do you know which will be dual mono or stereo?
  28. So if SRN news is 96kbps and SRN1 is 96kbps does that take two ports (4 audio outputs) or each one on a half a port?
  29. I have two stations co-located for which I'd like to use only one receiver. Only thing is, one's a commercial station, and one's a non-com. Will this work?
  30. Why do SRN and USA operate with separate channels?
  31. I'm sitting here watching the snow fall and checking our satellite feed to see if the snow is affecting it. I'm wondering if there is a squelch relay (or similar function) on the new receivers that I can incorporate into the bells and whistles around here.
  32. Well, it seems from everything you say that I will be fine with one receiver for picking up programs from the various networks I use.  So is there anything else I'm forgetting?
  33. Okay, suppose I can't afford a second unit right now.  Where will I be able to rent one while getting my unit repaired if it gets damaged?
