1. The satellite environment
    1. Two degree spacing
      1. Higher power adjacent satellites are in place.
      2. Satellite environment can change quickly.
        1. Loss of Telstar 401 in January 1997 and loss of Galaxy 4 in May 1998 caused users to move their services to other, working satellites.
        2. New high-powered video carriers can appear with no notice and no recourse.
        3. "But it worked OK for five years!" Just because your dish receives without interference now doesn’t mean it will receive without interference forever.
      3. Not all dishes are 2-degree compliant. ABC believes that only solid dishes of 3.7 meters or larger diameter can work in this environment -- regardless of manufacturer advertising.
    2. Digital v. analog
      1. Receivers respond differently to signal degradation in the digital domain than they did in the analog domain.
      2. Other than a "marginal" warning light, there may be no audible evidence that a digital receiver is about to "fall off the edge."
